Connections…another word for ‘Network’

I have had a number of people over the years express that they find ‘networking’ intimidating and uncomfortable. I try to redefine in my head that I am simply building relationships and connecting with others. These words don’t seem as scary as the word ‘networking’. It’s about building my own web of connections.

I have also had a number of people over the years tell me that it is critical to ‘build my network’. As I start up my new business, I realize what they meant and am so thankful to have built a strong one.

The support and encouragement I am getting - even from those I haven’t connected with in years, has helped me strengthen my confidence, open new doors and ideas, and just purely fun to reconnect and reminisce.

In taking a step back and reflecting on how I build my network, here are some things I do:

  • Connect with people on social media. I was blown away by the number of people (both professionally and personally) cheering me on when they saw my post about me starting my own business. Spend a couple minutes each month to send invites to connect with people you are currently working with (don’t wait until you are looking for that next opportunity…)

  • Approach EVERY interaction with the intent that it will be a long term connection -I never know when our paths are going to cross again.

  • Build the relationship without expecting to get something in return - if I do, then it is an added bonus.

  • Simple and courteous actions.

    • Send a quick email or chat to say ‘thank you’ or ‘good job ’. I know it feels awesome to me when I get these types of notes.

    • Say hello and wave to people I don’t even know.

  • Proactively schedule 30 minute coffees and chats with people I want to learn from or help. I realize these were easier to do when we were working in the office; but doing these virtually is as important, if not more so.

  • Don’t let time hold me back. Even if I haven’t connected with someone for quite awhile, time shouldn’t matter if I followed the tips above.

  • Bottom line….Treat others like I want to be treated.

Take the little steps…be authentic…it takes time to build your connections. It is worth the time investment.
